DeSoto County to Hire Litter Control Operator

*Story edited: Deadline to apply changed from March 29th to April 3rd

With a desire to maintain the beauty of DeSoto County and an increase in citizen requests for roadside litter collection, the Board of Supervisors voted on March 20th to hire a Litter Control Operator in the Department of Environmental Services. The Litter Control Operator is tasked with supervising all aspects of roadside litter collection, including, but not limited to, inspecting roadways and right-of-ways to insure litter free conditions, managing Trusty labor for litter pick-up, and hauling litter materials to disposal sites. The County currently has one litter collection crew operated by the Sheriff’s Department, but, with increased public demand, a second crew is needed to help monitor the hundreds of miles of road in the unincorporated county. “It’s a much needed position and we’re excited to have two crews that will now be able to help keep the County clean”, noted Michael Lee, President of the Board of Supervisors.

The Board of Supervisors has continuously emphasized the importance of maintaining a litter free community, highlighted by the numerous recycling and anti-litter initiatives approved by the Board. According to Ray Laughter, Director of DeSoto County Environmental Services, environmental stewardship benefits the entire community and the addition of a Litter Control Operator is a positive step towards a clean and green DeSoto County. “By keeping your property and residence in good repair, with an attractive curb appeal,” says Laughter, “It’s an investment in property values, deters crime, and sets a good example to all ages, and instills pride in ownership.”

The deadline to apply for the position of Litter Control Operator is April 3rd at 5pm. Applications can be found online at HERE and submitted to the DeSoto County Human Resources Department at 365 Losher Street, Suite 205A in Hernando or by email to hr@desotocountyms.gov.
