At a sunset ribbon cutting held on the banks of the Mississippi River, the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors and over fifty guests celebrated the completion of the most recent phase of construction at Hernando DeSoto River Park. The forty-one acre park located at 14258 Bass Landing Road in Lake Cormorant received approximately $270,000 worth of upgrades through a federal transportation grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) in conjunction with local funding from the Board of Supervisors. The most recent park improvements include a new paved parking lot, a gazebo with picnic tables, security cameras, historical markers, a bike repair station, and a scenic overlook that provides an unparalleled look at the beauty of the Mississippi River.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony, the Board of Supervisors dedicated the park to the people of DeSoto County. District Three Supervisor Bill Russell echoed this sentiment, noting that the park will last for years to come and be a place of enjoyment for the children and grandchildren of county residents. The Board also recognized the number of partners that joined with the Board to make this project a reality. Other partners in this project include Town of Walls, the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Federal Highway Administration, the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee District, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, Waggoner Engineering, and Progressive Construction.
