Contractor to Temporarily Close Intersection for Roundabout Installation
An upcoming Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) road project in DeSoto County is expected to enhance safety and traffic flow. As part of a commitment to ensure the well-being of residents, the contractor will temporarily close the intersection of Highway 301 and Starlanding Road to install a state-of-the-art roundabout.
"After 12 years of requests, and numerous safety studies, we are pleased MDOT is taking action to improve the Highway 301 and Starlanding intersection," said Supervisor Lee Caldwell.
The temporary closure of Starlanding Road and Highway 301 may result in inconveniences for motorists, but it is firmly believed that the installation of this roundabout will greatly benefit the community in the long run. Roundabouts have proven to be an effective and efficient traffic management solution, significantly reducing the number and severity of accidents at the busy intersection. Closing the intersection will help expedite the project.
"Promises made, promises kept," said Supervisor Ray Denison.
"Four years ago I promised to work with the Board of Supervisors and MDOT to improve this dangerous intersection. We extend our gratitude to the residents of DeSoto County for their cooperation and support throughout this endeavor. Together, we can create a safer and more accessible road network that benefits everyone."
The road closure is scheduled to begin on July 5, 2023. Once the project begins, the contractors will notify Supervisors when they expect the intersection to reopen.
MDOT designated a detour for trucks. The County has established a shorter detour for local traffic. The detours will be marked to guide drivers around the construction area.
