The Crisis Negotiation Team (C.R.T.) has been established to provide skilled verbal communicators who may be utilized to attempt to de-escalate and effect a surrender in critical situations where suspects have taken hostages, barricaded themselves, or have suicidal tendencies.
Members of the C.R.T. are required to attend a negotiators training course prior to use in a crisis situation, and also participate in continuous training throughout their career on the team.
The team must be available to respond 24 hours a day when called upon, requiring a great deal of commitment.
The goal of negotiators is to help bring about a peaceful resolution to critical incidents without the use of force in order to reduce injury and loss of life.
