Senior Centers and Activities 

Hernando: Young at Heart

Arthritis Class, Hook and Needle Club, Luncheons, Line Dancing, Mahjong, Seated Exercise, and Walking. Meetings: 3rd Thursday of every month. Southaven: Forever Young

Aerobics, Art Classes, Bridge, Bunko, Canasta, Dominoes, Line Dances, Pilates, Tai Chi, and Yoga. Dances, Trips, and events for single seniors. $5 Annual Membership Fee for DeSoto County Residents, Ages 60 and older, www.southaven.org. Library System

First Regional Library is a five-county public library cooperative with five branches in DeSoto County. Library cards can be used at any of the 14 branches in the system. Library cards can also be used to borrow material from the statewide Mississippi Library Partnership.

Books by Mail: Books, Books-on-Tape/CD, DVD's, CD's and videos can be delivered to patrons who can't get to a library because of illness, disability, or lack of transportation. Caregivers are also eligible. Send an email to booksbymail@firstregional.org.

Talking Book Services: The Mississippi Library Commission provides audio, large print, and braille books and magazines to eligible residents who are unable to read standard print due to visual, physical or organic disability. For information email talkingbooks@mlc.lib.ms.us.

AmeriCorps Seniors: RSVP Program

"Connecting seniors to volunteer opportunities to meet community needs through service."

What They Do:

  • Connect volunteers to make positive differences.
  • Match senior talent and expertise to needs.
  • Allow flexible schedule to fit your availability.
  • Provide orientation, training, and assistance.
  • Volunteer supplemental accident insurance.

How to Volunteer:

  • Must be 55 or older.
  • Complete application and attend brief orientation.
  • Select your volunteer opportunity. 

AmeriCorps Seniors: Foster Grandparents

AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in Proter-Leath's Foster Grandparent program provide critical help each week within local schools. Volunteers help children develop the skills, confidence & strength to succeed in life and school.

Benefits:

Eligibility:

  • Be 55 or older.
