[ARCHIVED] Courthouse Renovations

Courthouse Construction

HERNANDO, MS – The DeSoto County Historic Courthouse, a symbol of heritage and justice in the Courthouse Square in Hernando, is getting a well-deserved refresh.

Renovations are underway to preserve the building’s historic charm while improving accessibility, comfort, and efficiency for the people it serves every day.

Exterior improvements include:
 • Replacement of sidewalks

• Installation of new flower bed edging
 • Addition of an upgraded irrigation system
 • Installation of new railings at stairs and ramps

Interior improvements include:
 • Replacement of carpet in courtroom areas

• Installation of new flooring in corridors
• Renovation of the main restrooms on the first and second floors

All interior work will take place during nights and weekends to avoid disrupting court operations.

Supervisor Ray Denison, who serves on the renovation committee, said the work reflects the County’s commitment to maintaining the courthouse as both a functional government building and a historic treasure. “This building isn’t just a landmark. It’s a working courthouse that serves the people of DeSoto County every day,” said Denison. “These updates will make it more accessible, more efficient, and even more beautiful.”

Board President Mark Gardner, also a member of the renovation committee, emphasized the balance between preservation and progress.

“Our Historic Courthouse is one of the most recognized symbols of DeSoto County,” said Gardner. “These renovations honor its legacy while making sure it continues to serve residents and visitors safely and comfortably. It’s an important investment in preserving our history and preparing for the future.”

Work will continue throughout the coming months, with the Courthouse remaining open for business during regular hours.
