Modern Woodmen gave $250 through their plant a tree program and Michael Hatcher of Michael Hatcher & Associates, Inc. gave $250 to go towards planting shrubs, trees and adding benches to the Courthouse and Administration building lawns. The first tree was planted December 16, 2013 on the DeSoto County Administration lawn. Wayne Averett representing Modern Woodmen and Michael Hatcher were present. The Board of Supervisors participated in the symbolic planting of a magnolia tree to replace the one that Supervisor Harvey Lee and his wife, June donated to the County last year.

Local Modern Woodmen members plant trees
Local Modern Woodmen of America members gave a lasting gift to the community on 12/16/2013. Members of the Southaven Modern Woodmen Chapter gathered at the Desoto County Courthouse to plant five trees.
The project was part of the Plant A Tree Program, a nationwide program introduced by Modern Woodmen for its members in 2004. Through the program and the help of its members, Modern Woodmen has planted thousands of trees across the United States.
“This project allows local Modern Woodmen members to give a gift to the community,” says Wayne Averett local Modern Woodmen contact. “Planting trees is an important way to create a secure future for families, communities and the environment.”
Coordinated by local Modern Woodmen members, chapters provide opportunities to take part in social activities and community service projects to meet local needs. Youth service clubs provide young Modern Woodmen members with opportunities to volunteer, be patriotic, learn new skills, make friends and have fun.
