The federally designated MPO area includes Shelby County, Fayette County and DeSoto County. Supervisor Mark Gardner was joined by Mayor Mark Luttrell of the Shelby County to film a video on MPO Livabiliity.
“DeSoto County is very happy to be a part of the MPO,” said Supervisor Mark Gardner. The MPO meets regularly to discuss issues of regional importance. He explained the MPO allows the members to sit down with each other on topics like transportation, green space, economic development, air quality, and many other important regional topics.
In 2009 the department of sustainable community was formed to coordinate federal investments around the concepts of livability. Livability is more than economic development or transportation projects. The U. S. Department of Transportation defines livability as a process that ties the quality and location of transportation to broader opportunities such as access to jobs, affordable housing, quality schools and safer streets. Building on this partnership, the MPO’s regional livability initiative will help guide investments in mid-south communities for years to come.
